The study of the Czech language and literature is one of the core and traditional philological programmes. Departments of Czech Studies based in the Czech Republic provide, by their very nature, the foundations for research and teaching in the Czech language and literature all over the world.

Graduate profile for the public:
The graduate has a comprehensive knowledge of the contemporary Czech and of its use in various communicative situations as well as of the basic ways of analysing and interpreting both literary and non-literary texts. He or she is capable of using the language in a sophisticated way, and of putting his or her theoretical knowledge to good practical use. The graduate also has an overall overview of the history of Czech literature and literary theory. The graduate is familiar with the fundamental concepts and terminology of literary studies as applied to the history of Czech literature and to poetics in a broad sense. He or she is acquainted with the basic methods of editorial practice and applied literary studies (including the practice of book publishing, working in the media, and the like).
