SP characteristics
The study programme in Germanic and Northern European Studies revolves around three areas of cultural studies: linguistics, literary studies, history. This orientation shapes the teaching of practical and theoretical knowledge of languages (German, Danish, Norwegian, Swedish, Dutch and Finnish) as well as the training of skills to analyse and interpret texts of various types, to communicate in a given social and cultural framework. The study of all the philological disciplines involved builds on a rich tradition at the Faculty of Arts, Charles University and relates to the research activities and various forms of international cooperation at the Department of Germanic Studies.
The programme is divided into German, Scandinavian, Finnish and Dutch specializations. Each of them enables students to focus effectively on improving their language and linguistic skills, acquiring literary and cultural-historical knowledge related to the linguistic and cultural region of their interest. The political history and contemporary cultural and social affairs are – marginally – covered as well.
