SP characteristics
English and American Studies comprises all basic disciplines and so facilitates a complex approach to the area. The methodological premise is the functional structuralism of The Prague Linguistic School, whose application in the study of English is designed to be conceptually and terminologically compatible with the methods used in standard British and American academic studies of the English language. The linguistic part includes three complementary components: theoretical linguistic description, applied linguistics and practical language training. The theoretical description focuses on English phonetics and phonology, basic grammar disciplines, i.e. morphology and syntax, the lexical level (lexicology), introduction to text analysis (stylistics, pragmatics, discourse analysis) and English historical linguistics. Studies also include an introduction to language corpora. The primary aim of practical language teaching is to help students master the principles of academic discourse, and also develop some basic habits of translation from and into English.
The literary component of the programme is aimed at producing graduates capable of speaking and writing in fluent English, of efficiently communicating in an Anglophone environment, of writing complex academic and popular texts in English, and who have mastered basic methods of research in the field of Anglo-American culture. Graduates have been trained in depth in the rich literary history of the British Isles and North America, having studied the cultural, historical and political contexts of a given time and region. Graduates have basic knowledge of comparative cultural methodology, literary theory and general critical thinking about literature.
