The focus of the programme in French Studies is on modern philology: Graduates will be required to study the French language and the literature of French speaking countries from both a synchronic and a diachronic perspective and with regard to current theory and the history and culture of the regions. This is complemented with the study of modern languages (English plus another major language in academic reading, Latin, and the option to learn one of the Romance languages), the fundamentals of linguistics and literary theory, history, and the life and institutions of French-speaking countries (Quebec, Belgium, Switzerland, French-speaking Africa), literary translation, a basic grounding in French cinema, the international dimension of Francophony and other specialized lectures. Foreign internships, cooperation with embassies of French-speaking countries, European institutions, and other partners also form an integral part of the programme.

Graduate profile for the public:
Graduates are proficient in general spoken and written French (level C1 of the CEFR) as well as specialized French for the humanities, have a comprehensive knowledge of literary and linguistic disciplines applied to the French language, literary theory and criticism, the literary and cultural history of France, Belgium, Switzerland, Francophone Canada and Africa, and a good grounding in European and American cultural contexts. They are prepared to enter a master’s programme and to pursue scholarly research in the field. Graduates are qualified for domains including publishing and editing, translation, the media, diplomatic service and state administration, international institutions, business and non-profit organizations.
