SP characteristics

The study of philosophy relates to the tradition of two-and-a-half thousand years, developing it in interdisciplinary contact with the findings of current research. Methodically cultivated philosophical reflection is of an increasing and invaluable importance for the open environment of our (and not only our) culture. As philosophy reflects on the relationship between knowledge and action, it can pose ethical, political as well as historical questions which, per definition, lie beyond the scope of both experimental and social sciences. The study of philosophy aims to introduce students to philosophical issues, style and methodology of philosophical work from two main perspectives: the historical and the systematic. The philosophical specialisations pursued at the Institute of Philosophy and Religious Studies at the Faculty of Arts, Charles University include, among others, history of ancient, medieval, renaissance, early-modern, modern and post-modern philosophy, systematic philosophy, philosophy of religion, phenomenology, analytic philosophy and ethics. Philosophy graduates have acquired knowledge and methods which provide a basic grounding in the field of philosophy.

Graduate profile for the public:
Graduates have mastered the basic methods of academic work and are acquainted with the history of philosophy (ancient philosophy, patristic philosophy and scholasticism, early-modern philosophy, 19th and 20th century philosophy). They have a good grounding in contemporary philosophy (both analytic and continental). They also, as a matter of course, have advanced competence in two major languages and have mastered the basics of either Latin or ancient Greek. Graduates are proficient in critical philosophical evaluation, in the formulation of important questions and in the provision of cogent responses. They have advanced skills in abstraction and an analytical approach to solving complex issues, as well as the ability to effectively evaluate texts and to clearly formulate their own ideas in oral and written form.
