SP characteristics

The field of film studies proposed for re-accreditation is organized as a three-year undergraduate study. It includes general core of the Faculty of Arts (world language, intro to philosophy, physical education ), courses in film theory, history of the world cinema, the Czech and Slovak film and a series of elective courses from other disciplines. The emphasis is on written assignments of various types, and active participation in seminars (discussion on the topic, text analysis, development of critical thinking and writing skills, historical criticism and analysis of sources, archival research, study of periodicals and literature, introductory texts for films in art house cinemas, dramaturgy, film festivals, etc.). The study supports the development of students’ communication skills, including the ability to formulate the problem in a structured way and to include it a broader context. The aim is to train qualified film experts capable to succeed in a wide range of professional careers outside the academia and to continue in the M.A. program in film studies.

Graduate profile for the public:
B.A. graduates are familiar with the history of world cinema and of Czech and Slovak film. They have basic knowledge of the main developments in film theory and aesthetics, they are acquainted with major current research themes and familiar with basic skills relevant to the field of film studies. They may seek positions as editors of specialized film or other cultural periodicals, of newspaper cultural sections or work as copyreaders. They may go on to careers of qualified film critics and writers, or find employment as organizers, programmers, instructors, in public relations etc., or as members of film festival organization and film production teams. They may also pursue careers as experts employed by film sector and other cultural institutions, even work in state administration.
