The aim of the programme in Czech Language and Literature is to deepen students’ knowledge in the theory and methodology of literary studies, as well as the history of Czech literature, and also in linguistic methodology and theory and in the diachronic and synchronic research of the Czech language. The programme is designed to enhance students’ skills in independent thinking and considering issues in a broader context. This focus is beneficial both for students’ future employment prospects in a diversity of professional contexts requiring the application of language, and for possible scientific careers in the field of Czech Studies. Students have an opportunity to choose from a broad range of optional courses which enables them to specialize in particular topics of their choice.

Graduate profile for the public:
Graduates of the MA programme are qualified for professional work in the field and have the ability to continuously follow changes in the field. Their comprehensive grounding in literary studies enables them to pursue activities related to any aspect of literature – from literary history to theory to criticism – and also to culture in a broader sense. They are also capable of clear and precise communication in Czech and have a deeper understanding of the historical development of Czech and of the factors influencing successful and functional communication. Besides these abilities, they can also relate their knowledge of the historical development of Czech to the context of other Slavonic languages.
