SP characteristics

The two-year Master's degree program in Sociology, which is offered by the Department of Sociology at the CU Faculty of Arts, prepares students for employment in the rapidly changing labour market or for continuing their academic career in doctoral studies. The characteristics of the degree programme correspond to contemporary international standards in sociology programmes and at the same time reflect the distinguished historical record of sociology at the Faculty of Arts. The programme fosters students' independence, creativity, analytical thinking and their ability to view problems from multiple perspectives. The value placed on cultivating the development of individual predispositions and the within-discipline specialisation of every student is combined with an emphasis on mastering the ability to solve tasks and problems that require knowledge of current discussions in the field of sociology and the use of advanced methods of sociological research. The educational goals of the program are achieved via a carefully designed curriculum, in which mandatory courses on current sociological theory and advanced methodology combine with opportunities for developing each student's own interest within the discipline. The first year of study is mainly dedicated to acquiring key knowledge and skills in the subject area, and the focus of the second year is on developing a more specialised focus and applying acquired knowledge and skills in solving an individual research task.
