KOMU JE KURZ URČEN: KJP nabízí dva typy kurzu: kurz Mgr. Proškové je tematicky vhodnější pro studenty Institutu politologických studií (IPS), Institutu mezinárodních studií (IMS) a Institutu komunikačních studií a žurnalistiky (IKSŽ). Kurz Mgr. Štěpánkové pak pro studenty Institutu sociologických studií (ISS) .
CÍL KURZU: Budování odbornější slovní zásoby, upevnění znalostí a správného používání obtížnějších gramatických struktur, rozvoj akademických dovedností.

The winter term course for both bachelor and master's programmes - English as a Second Foreign Language - intermediate level B2 (https://www.bbc.co.uk/learningenglish/english/course/test-your-level)
A non-compulsory preparation course, taking students to the level when they can sign for their mandatory specialized courses, focusing on building vocabulary relevant to students of social sciences, improving grammar knowledge and correct usage, and developing academic skills.
The Department of Foreign Languages offers two types of the course:
Mgr Proskova's seminars are recommended mainly for students of journalism at the Institute of Communication Studies and Journalism (IKSŽ), or possibly students from the Institute of Political Studies (IPS) or the Institute of International Studies (IMS).
Mgr Gloverova's seminars are recommended for students of Czech-German Studies (CNS), International studies (IMS) and the Institute of Political Studies (IPS).
Mgr Gloverova's students are required to take a placement test organised by Jana Kunzová, B.A. (English for IMS) and Kamila Panešová ( English for PVP and PMV). The enrolment starts on 25 September 2024 at 18:00 once the results of the placement test are known. PLEASE NOTE: Mgr. Michaela Gloverová's course of English for Social Sciences is designed for students with a minimum entry level of B1. For this reason, students who achieve a total score of 50 and below on the placement test may not be admitted to that course and are advised to improve their English language skills on their own in order to reach this entry level and achieve a score above 50 on the placement test held in the next academic year.
Mgr. Proskova's group, tailor-made to journalism students, will be held on Tuesdays 17-18:20 in #110 Room of the Hollar bldng. Students have been recommended this course via email, based on their Scio test results. Please check your email inbox on a regular basis prior to the registration for courses. The registration for all ASV I courses will commence on September .... th at noon.

Cíl předmětu -
Upevnit gramatické znalosti ze střední školy a představit pokročilejší slovní zásobu, kterou budou studenti FSV potřebovat pro úspěšné absolvování odborných jazykových kurzů. Rozvíjet akademické dovednosti v mluveném i psaném projevu - příprava na ústní prezentaci (nejnovější prezentační metody, použití pokročilejších spojovacích výrazů), formální jazykové prvky při psaní anotace seminární práce.

Consolidation of grammar knowledge. Introduction of more advanced vocabulary needed for specialized language courses. Developing academic skills in speaking and writing - preparation for oral presentations (latest presentation techniques, more advanced discourse markers), formal register for thesis abstracts.

Písemný konsolidační test na konci ZS ověřující látku z celého ZS, poslech s porozuměním a kratší formální písemný útvar. 60 bodů, 60 minut, úspěšné splnění 65%
Účast na hodinách je povinná, tolerují se nejvýše tři absence během semestru. Při delší či častější nepřítomnosti je třeba kontaktovat vyučující (emailem, případně osobně či telefonicky v konzultačních hodinách).

Mgr. Alena Prošková - CREDIT REQUIREMENTS:
1. To obtain the credit, students are required to prepare for seminars, actively participate in lessons, bring a fresh item of news every week, take several short quizzes (testing newly acquired vocab and grammar) and successfully pass the end-of-term credit test. 2. Students must deliver one oral presentation in the class. It is the students' responsibility to see the teacher to set topics and dates of presentations.
CREDIT TEST: Points - 60, pass level - 65%.
In our language courses, attendance records are kept, and once you enroll you will be expected to attend classes regularly (please note that only three absences a term are tolerated). If a student misses more than three lessons he/she is required to contact his/her teacher via e-mail, phone or personally during the consultation hours.
Mgr. Michaela Gloverová - credit requirements
CREDIT REQUIREMENTS I. One written midterm test covering the first half of the winter term (60 points, 60 minutes, pass level 70%, two attempts).
II. One written complex test covering the entire winter term (60 points, 60 minutes, pass level 70 %, two attempts).

III. Writing a summary. Extent : app 200 words. Students will write a summary (200 +/- 20 words) of an article when taking the written complex test.
Assessment of a summary - total of 15 points (pass level 70 %)

IV. Preparation of News Overview. Structure: each week of winter term one set of news (students will provide the article link), 7 words ( plus recording of correct pronunciation of the selected terms) and a brief of summary of an article ( 3-5 sentences). Each student will be asked to create his/her own quizlet covering the terms selected ( total of 70 terms) and send such link to the teacher by 7 January 2025. Quizlet terms will be included in the complex test.To give you an idea what such overview should look like, please go to Soubory. Deadline: 7.1.2024 (via email). Complex test cannot be taken unless the News Overview is submitted. (BBC Learning English - Course: News Review / Unit 1)
V. Mock presentation PECHA KUCHA style (20 points)
Each group (of 3 students) will prepare a mock presentation for fellow students. The presentation will relate to one of the winter term topics as per students‘ choice. Each group will sign up for a certain date during the first two seminars of the winter term. PPT presentation shall follow the style of PECHA KUCHA, i.e. for every slide there is a time limit of 60-80 seconds allocated and then the new slide is introduced. For each student the number of slides should be 8. Students will prepare a handout with a list of key words, background information and a conversation question related to the given topic and will provide their teacher with such at the latest two days prior to their presentation date.
VI. After the second and the third seminar (topic of presentation skills and academic English) each student will save in his or her Google folder screenshots of completed exercises from the website: http://zbenglish.net/sites/voca/AWL/id21.htm - 5 exercises/Sublist 1 and 5 exercises/Sublist 2. The task is to be submitted prior to the seminar number 4.
VII. Bonus points may be gained by completing extra tasks (e.g. quiz based on information included in BBC News - https://www.radioprostor.cz/program , following Hard Talk https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/p004t1s0, BBC Global news Podcast, home team assignments).
VIII. Attendance in class is mandatory. Please note that only three absences a term are tolerated. Attendance will be taken in class. If a student misses more than four lessons he/she is required to contact his/her teacher during the consultation hours or via e-mail.

Metody výuky -

S tematy se studenti budou seznamovat prostřednictvím čtení, poslechu a sledování výukových a autentických materiálů. Následné debaty a aktivity mají za cíl zafixovat novou látku a rozvíjet ústní a písemný projev. Studenti budou pracovat ve skupinách.

Průběžné sledování aktuálních zpráv v angličtině a písemné shrnutí vybrané události do každé hodiny. Pestrá škála navazujících aktivit v semináři - upevní správnou výslovnost, umožní opakované aktivní použití nových výrazů v odpovídajícím kontextu a připomene pokročilejší gramatické a stylistické jevy. Práce s video/audio materiály ve dvojicích či skupinách. Svižné zopakování obtížnější gramatiky - gramatická remediální cvičení většinou formou samostudia, kontrola a upevnění v následujícím semináři. Základní akademické dovednosti - formální jazykový registr a aktivní používání pokročilejších spojovacích výrazů v písemném i ústním projevu.

Following breaking news and current affairs, using original English resources. Summarizing news items in writing as part of home assignments. Various follow-up activities to teach correct pronunciation, to repeatedly use new terms in appropriate contexts, and to remind students of some tricky grammar features. Work with audio/video materials. Grammar rules review for homework, reinforcement of grammar knowledge in class. Introducing academic skills, highlighting formal register and advanced discourse markers.
Mgr Gloverova´s groups:
During the classes we adopt communicative approach towards foreign language learning and employ various methods and techniques, ranging from teacher’s instruction to discovery technique when students themselves find out the grammar rules or try to form new words from the root ones. Also, the multiple intelligence theory is used which can cater for the needs of all types of learners.

Vstupní požadavky -
Zápis do kurzu je podmíněn účastí na rozřazovacím testu ve čtvrtek 1. října 2016.
K testu je nutné se zapsat a nelze nabídnout náhradní termín. Zapisujte se prosím v SISu do předmětu Rozřazovací test JLB099 podle svých časových možností, pokud možno k vyučujícímu angličtiny pro Váš obor. Zápis je možný v termínu od 14. do 30. 9.
