Anotace

Application of principles of both general and special bacteriology, virology, parasitology and mycology, including laboratory diagnostics, into the clinical practice. Essentials of clinical mikrobiology, systemic infections. Alimentary infections. Vectorn borne diseases. Sexually transmitted diseases and infections of the urinary tract. Respiratory diseases. Infections of the CNS. Childhood infections. Infections of the skin and soft tissues. Infections in immunocompromised patients. Vaccination. Nosocomial infections. Practical application by interactive learning using clinical cases with the focus on the differential diagnosis, proper sampling techniques and an appropriate antibiotic therapy.

Cíl předmětu

1.     The students gain practical skills in differential diagnosis of common infectious diseases and will be able to interpret laboratory results

2.     The students learn basic principles of clinical application of general microbiology

3.      The students will gain basic knowledge of proper antimicrobial therapy in common infectious diseases

Požadavky ke zkoušce

Requirements for credit

1. All protocols from practical classes completed
2. Not more than 1 excused absence (1 practical class)
3. Credit test accomplished
4. In case of more than 1 absence – oral examination on the missed topic by the group teacher

CREDIT TEST
1. Presented on the next-to-last final practical class
2. Location: the seminar room at the Microbiology department.  Students are responsible for having access to Moodle, which is required for the test.
3. Contains 30 multiple choice questions, time to complete: 20 minutes
4. Correct answers necessary to pass ≥ 70%
5. In case of failure to pass - only 1 correction attempt (mandatory)

CORRECTION CREDIT TEST
The correction test is obligatory for all students who failed the 1st attempt.
In case of failure of the correction test – oral examination of the student on an assigned topic is given (the topic will be sent by email or directly given by a group teacher).

ORAL EXAMINATION due to the missed practical class
Theme: the topic missed during the practical class or an assigned theme
Short oral examination without preparation, the topic and results will be recorded in the student’s report card.

 Examination

The students, who received credits for both winter and summer terms, can register for the exam. The final exam is oral. The dates of the exams are available in SIS and Moodle. Students can sign up for a particular date in SIS

It is strictly forbidden to use any personal electronic devices during any type of examination (credit test, final exam). In case the student is caught not obeying these rules, the exam is classified as„Fail“. The same rule applies also when student communicates with others during the testing or preparation for the final exam. The students are not allowed to leave the preparation room after selecting the questions for the final exam.

Sylabus

Lectures Lectures in the winter term will introduce the topics of clinical microbiology in six areas focusing on pathogens, differential diagnosis and therapy. 1. Alimentary infections. Viral, bacterial and parasitic infections 2. Vaccine-preventable infections. Mandatory and recommended vaccination. 3. Respiratory infections. Influenza. TBC. 4. Sexually transmitted diseases. Gonorrhoea, Chlamydia, Syphilis, HIV, viral hepatitis. 5. Vector borne infections (tick, mosquitos, louse, heteropter) 6. Nosocomial infections. The students will discuss with their teachers clinical cases (differential diagnosis, suspected pathogens and therapy). They will also be able to see examples of daily routine in the clinical diagnostic laboratory with selected diagnostic tasks. In addition, two seminar sessions will be held on the topics of 1) infections in the childhood and 2) infections in immunocompromised patients. 1.  Alimentary infections. Vstupní požadavky

Prerequisites: Microbiology I, Mandatory courses GENERAL MEDICINE 1st year. Knowledge gained in the Microbiology I course is essential for the students to understand the practical application of the basic principles of microbiology. Understanding basic mechanisms of pathogenesis of the individual microbial agents from the Microbiology I is necessary to successfully follow the clinically oriented topics in this course.
