SP characteristics

The MA programme in Phonetics develops students’ knowledge in the fundamental areas of spoken communication, namely knowledge focusing on the systematic description of speech at the segmental and prosodic level. The programme especially provides a more intensive insight into current issues in speech sciences and, given the students’ professional focus, into their interdisciplinary aspects. The study programme also comprises further development of skills for working with speech material.

Graduate profile for the public:
Graduates gain a thorough grounding in speech production and perception, principles of phonological description and current approaches to it at the segmental and prosodic levels, as well as the knowledge of the acoustic structure of speech. They acquire skills for handling speech, from acoustic analysis of speech and methods of extracting acoustic parameters from the speech signal to auditory examinations and analytical and holistic assessment of speech. They also gain experience with statistical evaluation of phonetic data. Given each graduate’s individual professional focus, s/he gains advanced knowledge in various interdisciplinary aspects of speech communication and develops advanced analytical skills in more demanding processing of the speech signal and in using speech technology.
