SP characteristics

The field of film studies proposed for re-accreditation is organized as a two-year M.A. study. It includes courses in film theory,
history of the world cinema, the Czech and Slovak film and a series of elective courses from other disciplines. The emphasis
is on written assignments of various types, and active participation in seminars (discussion on the topic, text analysis,
development of critical thinking and writing skills, historical criticism and analysis of sources, archival research, study of
periodicals and literature, introductory texts for films in art house cinemas, dramaturgy, film festivals, etc.). The study supports
the development of students’ communication skills, including the ability to formulate the problem in a structured way and to
include it a broader context. The aim is to train qualified film experts capable to succeed in a wide range of professional careers
outside the academia and to continue in the Ph.D. program in film studies.

Graduate profile for the public:
The graduate is equipped with detailed knowledge of the history of world cinema
and of Czech and Slovak film in a broad interdisciplinary context and with the knowledge of theoretical reflection on the nature
of the film medium and possibilities of studies of visual culture. Graduates may seek positions as editors of specialized
periodicals, cultural pages of daily periodicals or in other media, such as editor of publishing houses, as film critics, such as
organizers or dramaturgs as members of film festival staffs and film production teams or as experts employed by cultural
institutions. Above all, they are equipped with the knowledge necessary for their own research activities, and possibly for the
continuation of their studies in a Ph.D. program and employment in the academia.
