The degree program Empirical and Comparative Linguistics aims to train empirically oriented linguists who will have both a deeper knowledge of the structure of Czech language and the ability to use this knowledge while comparing Czech with other languages of the world. The program differs from other, more traditional philological programs in its emphasis on empirical methodology. Students acquire knowledge of empirical methods; they get acquainted with various fields of linguistic research and they focus both on Czech and on comparative linguistic studies. The program is distinctive because it offers the students to specialize on selected linguistic subfields in great depth.

Graduate profile for the public:
Graduates have mastered empirical linguistic methodology; they know how to use basic statistical methods and they have deep knowledge of linguistic terminology in Czech and English. They orient themselves in the current trends in linguistic research and are familiar with various empirical methods. Based on their focus, graduates get deep understanding of Czech language, its structure and use, they are aware of the typological differences between the languages in the world and they are able to use language corpora. Graduates also can read and interpret scientific literature in English.
