SP characteristics
The programme educates students in one of the principal segments of area studies, focused on Latin America. With the political, economic and cultural importance of the region on the rise, an increasing number of experts with an orientation towards Latin America will be needed in the Czech Republic’s state and public administration and the private sector.
A typical area studies discipline, Iberoamerican Studies has a significantly interdisciplinary nature. Iberoamerican research in Latin America, its history and its present, relies primarily on findings and methods in history, political science, geography and literary studies.
The unique nature of Iberoamerican Studies lies in its complex view of Latin American society; thus, the discipline has no specializations.
Iberoamerican Studies is an academic discipline offering a wide spectrum of employment opportunities. The department maintains close cooperation with departments primarily in the Atlantic world, jointly developing methods for a better academic understanding of the history and present of Latin America, which, however, is also of practical use for diplomats, professionals in culture, the commercial sector and other areas.

Graduate profile for the public:
Graduates have a theoretical grounding essential for an understanding of Latin American issues, primarily in the context of the historical development of societies with unique cultures which, beginning in the late 16th century, emerged on the basis of pre-Columbian communities and immigration from other parts of the world. Graduates are able to apply their own critical judgement when assimilating new data in the light of existing knowledge. They are qualified for employment in the fields of education and culture, in the civil service as well as business.
