Anotace - angličtina
This course on intralingual translation that involves translating within the same language, such as rephrasing or rewriting texts, will provide an overview of the theoretical approaches and debates in relation to this kind of translation within the field of Translation Studies. It will examine instances of intralingual reformulation and different types of rewritings, from didactic materials to more ‘ideological’ translations where the impact exerted by language and translation on the construction of identity is taken into consideration. During the course students will analyze how some of the classics of British and American literature have been rewritten for specific categories of readers (children, learners of English as a foreign language, students, etc.) or how poems have been rewritten as novels and how critical theory has been narrativized in literary texts. The course reconceptualizes intralingual translation as a dynamic, interdisciplinary process central in constructing national identity, facilitating cultural heritage, adapting to social changes, and enhancing the acceptability of language varieties. The course is structured around three key types of intralingual translation: 1) Intergeneric translation (within genres and communicative functions), focusing on simplification, paraphrasing, and audience-oriented rewriting 2) Diachronic translation (across time), addressing the modernization and reinterpretation of texts in changing cultural contexts 3) Dialectical translation (across language varieties), exploring adaptation across registers, dialects, and socio-cultural norms

Sylabus - angličtina

1) Introduction to Intralingual Translation

(Overview of the course. Definition and scope of intralingual translation. Discussion on the significance of intralingual translation within the field of Translation Studies, highlighting Roman Jakobson’s foundational contributions, including his distinctions between intralingual, interlingual (between different languages), and intersemiotic (between different systems of signs) translations).

2) Theoretical Foundations of Intraligual Translation

(Historical development of intralingual translation studies. Key theoretical and practical approaches. Role of language in shaping identity and impact of intralingual translation on cultural and individual identity is discussed. Types of intralingual translation - integeneric, diachronic, and dialectical).

3) Theoretical and Practical Foundations of Intergeneric Intralingual Translation

(Building on Roman Jakobson’s framework, students will explore strategies such as simplification, paraphrasing, explicitation, and restructuring. The session emphasizes a shift from semantic equivalence to functional adequacy and audience-oriented communication. Examples from academic, journalistic, and literary texts will be analyzed. Students will apply these strategies in short comparative and rewriting tasks)

4) Didactic Materials and Intralingual Translation

(The place of intralingual translation in educational contexts will be discussed, by focusing on strategies such as simplification, scaffolding, and the use of plain and easy language. Students will analyze how textbooks and instructional materials are restructured to enhance comprehension and accessibility. Practical tasks involve adapting complex texts into learner-friendly formats).

5) Adapting Literature for Language Learners

(This lecture will explores how literary texts are adapted for ESL/EFL audiences through intralingual translation. Key strategies include lexical simplification, syntactic reduction, and cultural mediation. Attention will be given to preserving narrative meaning while reducing linguistic complexity. Practical activities involve rewriting literary excerpts for specific learner levels).

7) Intralingual Translation for Specific Audiences

(This lecture will address intralingual translation as audience-oriented adaptation across different demographic and professional groups. It covers strategies for children, students, and specialized audiences, including easy language and accessible communication formats. Students will analyze how cultural, cognitive, and contextual factors influence text transformation. Case studies from literature, media, and institutional discourse will be discussed).

8) Theoretical and Practical Foundations of Diachronic Intralingual Translation

(This lecture will introduce diachronic intralingual translation, focusing on adapting texts and genre transformation across time. It examines how language change and cultural shifts require texts to be updated and reinterpreted for new audiences. Students will explore strategies for modernizing older texts while preserving their core meaning)

9) From Classic to Contemporary Literature

(Through the analysis of selected works that have undergone this transformation, from classic to contemporary literature, students will gain insight into the interplay between form and content and the possibilities it opens up for literary creativity and interpretation).

10) Dialectical Intralingual Translation

(Analysis and discussion of translation of British novels into American from a Multimodal stylistic perspective. The processes of Editing the text, Repackaging the text, Americanizing the text, Crafting the text (direct-indirect discourse), Revoicing the text will be discussed).

11) Narrativizing Critical Theory

(Incorporation of critical theory into literary texts, and its impact on reader understanding and engagement. Through in-depth analysis of selected texts – ranging from novels and poetry to plays and essays – students will gain insights into the ways authors incorporate critical theoretical perspectives into their writing, challenging readers to see beyond the surface narrative).

12) Students presentations and discussions of selected texts

A comprehensive reading list will be provided, including key texts and selected literary works that exemplify intralingual translation.
