Introduction to the Study of Language familiarises students with general liguistic terms such as language structure, language development and language typology. The aim is to introduce students to the complexity of the system and different manners of its analysis. Second half of the course is based on structural-functional approach to language and it focuses on the morphological characteristics of word classes including conversion.

1. The learner acquires understanding of basic linguistic terminology and properties of the universals and specifics of the language system and is able to use and interpret them correctly in a given context. 2. The learner applies knowledge of new theoretical concepts in a contextually appropriate manner - abstracts, specifies, analyses more complex discourse structures. 3. 1. The learner compares relevant aspects of the Czech and English language systems. 2. The learner describes the language system and explains the difference between the different language plans and their basic elements. 3. The learner interprets linguistic material in terms of basic language units. 4. The learner identifies word classes in context. 5. The learner demonstrates analysis of morphological categories in practical examples. 6. The learner identifies the root word and individual affixes and interprets their meaning. 7.
