SP characteristics

The History with a Focus on Education study programme is designed as the first stage of a two-stage undergraduate teacher education programme for future history teachers. After completing both stages of study, graduates will obtain the qualification to teach history (civics/history) at lower secondary schools, upper secondary schools, and at the lower level of multi-year grammar schools. At the same time, the programme prepares graduates for educational, cultural, and popularisation activities related to historical education and historical culture.

Graduates of the Bachelor’s programme may work in education in lower positions (e.g. as teaching assistants). To obtain full teaching qualification, it is necessary to continue and successfully complete the follow-up Master’s programme Teaching History for Upper Secondary Schools.

The programme is based on a competency-based approach to teacher education and aims to provide gradual, coherent, and systematic preparation for the teaching profession in accordance with the competencies defined in the Competency Framework for Teacher Training Graduates (KRAAU, Ministry of Education, Youth and Sports of the Czech Republic, 2023). Emphasis is placed on integrating subject knowledge, subject didactics, and pedagogical-psychological preparation, as well as on the development of reflective professional practice.

At the Bachelor’s level, students primarily focus on building a solid foundation in historiography, understanding the interpretative nature of historical knowledge, while also developing basic pedagogical, psychological and didactic competencies that form the basis for further development and refinement in the follow-up Master’s programme aimed at full teaching responsibility.

The programme emphasises critical work with historical sources and scholarly literature, understanding historical topics in their broader social, cultural, and value-related contexts, and on the ability to didactically transform historical knowledge for the purposes of school education. Students are also guided to reflect on the role of history in the public sphere and to approach the popularisation of the past in a sensitive and responsible manner with regard to contemporary society.

The study programme is intended for all those who are interested in becoming future history teachers and who wish to gain a solid orientation in history and historical culture.

The programme is full-time and is compulsorily offered in combined (double-subject) form with another education-oriented study programme.

The programme is taught in Czech.
More details
Graduate profile for the public:
Graduates of the Bachelor’s degree programme History with a Focus on Education acquire fundamental disciplinary, didactic and pedagogical foundations that prepare them for further study in a follow-up Master’s programme in teacher education and for their future professional development in the fields of education, culture, and work with historical knowledge. The programme provides a solid introduction to history while systematically developing skills and competencies essential for the teaching profession.

Disciplinary Profile of the Graduate

In the disciplinary component of the programme, graduates gain a basic orientation in key historical topics and historiographical approaches to the study of the past. The curriculum places emphasis on understanding the interpretative nature of historical knowledge, on working with historical sources and scholarly literature, and on comprehending the role of historiographical concepts in the interpretation of history. Graduates become familiar with selected earlier and contemporary historiographical approaches and understand their development and broader interdisciplinary contexts.

Graduates learn to critically work with various types of sources, including digital ones, and develop the ability to formulate historical arguments and to communicate in a cultivated manner both orally and in

writing. The knowledge and skills acquired enable graduates to reflect on historical topics in their social and cultural contexts and sensitively relate them to current issues and public debates.

Subject-Didactic and Pedagogical Profile of the Graduate

The programme contributes to the development of basic subject-didactic competencies related to the teaching of history and other educational subjects with a significant historical component. Graduates are guided to didactically transform historical topics and concepts for the purposes of school education, to take into account their students’ educational needs, and to foster the development of historical thinking, historical literacy, and a critical approach to the past.

As part of the introductory teacher education component and teaching practice, graduates gain basic experience in lesson planning, teaching and reflection, in creating a safe and supportive learning environment, and in providing feedback to students. The programme also develops graduates’ capacity for self-reflection and the gradual formation of their professional identity as history teachers.

Professional Prospects of the Graduate

Graduates of the programme are prepared to continue their studies in a follow-up Master’s programme in the teaching of history, where they can further deepen their disciplinary, didactic and pedagogical competencies. At the same time, they acquire transferable skills (such as critical work with information, analytical thinking, argumentation and communication) that are applicable not only in education but also in museum and memory education, the popularisation of history, cultural and educational institutions, and the media.
