SP characteristics

The Latin Language and Literature with a Focus on Education Bachelor’s degree programme is designed as the first stage of a two-stage undergraduate teacher education programme. Upon completion of both the Bachelor’s and the follow-up Master’s degree programmes, graduates are qualified to teach Latin at upper secondary schools, particularly grammar schools, and to work in related educational and cultural institutions.

Graduates of the Bachelor’s programme may work in education in entry-level positions (e.g. as teaching assistants). Full teaching qualification requires successful completion of the follow-up Master’s degree programme in the Teaching of Latin.

The programme is based on a competency-based approach to teacher education and aims to provide gradual, coherent and systematic preparation for the teaching profession in accordance with the Competency Framework for Teacher Education Graduates (KRAAU, Ministry of Education, Youth and Sports, 2023). Emphasis is placed on the development of disciplinary, subject-didactic and pedagogical-psychological competencies in addition to shaping teachers as reflective practitioners.

At the Bachelor’s level, students focus primarily on building a solid disciplinary foundation in Classical Latin, ancient culture and Roman literature, while simultaneously developing basic didactic and pedagogical-psychological competencies. The programme prepares students for further professional

development in the follow-up Master’s programme, where they gradually assume full responsibility for teaching.

The programme is intended for all those interested in the teaching profession and in a deeper understanding of both the Latin language and ancient culture as key foundations of European education.

The programme is full-time and is compulsorily offered in combined (double-subject) form with another education-oriented study programme.

The language of instruction is Czech.

Graduate profile for the public:
Graduates of the Latin Language and Literature with a Focus on Education Bachelor’s degree programme acquire the fundamental disciplinary, didactic and pedagogical foundations that prepare them for further study in a follow-up Master’s degree programme in teacher education and for their future professional development in the field of education.

At a level appropriate for prospective teaching practice, graduates possess a reliable body of knowledge and skills in Classical Latin, based on systematic study of vocabulary and grammar (morphology and syntax) and on the reading of selected Latin texts in both translation and the original language. They are familiar with key periods and areas of ancient, particularly Roman, culture, literature and history, and are able to relate this knowledge to broader cultural and social contexts.

During their studies, graduates become acquainted with basic approaches to the teaching of Latin, including the specific features of teaching a non-spoken (ancient) language, as well as with selected methods and techniques of language education. They understand the principles of effective use of digital technologies and modern teaching tools, including educational applications and artificial intelligence, in Latin language instruction.

Graduates understand the role of Latin instruction within the Czech educational system, are familiar with relevant curricular documents, and are aware of institutions and platforms dedicated to Latin and its teaching, which they use for their own professional development.

At the same time, graduates develop essential teaching competencies: they are able to plan, implement and reflect on instruction, provide feedback, create a supportive and safe learning environment, and work systematically with their professional portfolio as a tool for self-reflection and professional growth.

The programme creates the conditions for further deepening these knowledge skills and competencies in a follow-up Master's programme so that upon completion, students are able to take full responsibility for teaching.
