SP characteristics

The general aim of the study is to acquire the theoretical and practical knowledge and the methods necessary for understanding, evaluating and working in the field of new media, information technology and other fields related to communication studies. Emphasis is placed on an interdisciplinary approach, and on the evaluation of information technology issues in relation to society, individuals and its practical application, as well as on understanding the meaning, concepts, and trends of information technology development in society and culture.
Our goal is to produce graduates who are equipped to creatively connect all the various areas of social, economic, and academic life that relate to new media. They are able to assess the impacts and risks associated with the development of new media, particularly in the areas of digital and communication technologies. Examples of key areas include the creative industries (such as the videogame industry), the quickly developing field of digital humanities, educational innovation mediated by digital technologies, interdisciplinary approaches in data science, but also the pervasive and progressive digitization of government and public institutions (e.g. in museums).
Another aim of the study program is to foster skills in finding creative solutions, and their implementation in a wide range of government institutions, private companies, as well as the non-profit sector. A system of internships and individual projects allows us (and our partner institutions and companies) to focus students towards current issues, work environments and requirements. The study program combines the approaches of information science, media studies, sociology, psychology and didactics. Its uniqueness lies in the link between these disciplines and applied research fields such as user interface design or game design.

Graduate profile for the public:
Our graduates have practical and theoretical knowledge of new media and communication theory. They interconnect the fields of science, information technology and humanities. Thanks to their knowledge and ability to reflect critically in these areas, they are able to work in the academic, public and private sectors, both commercial and non-commercial. Graduates are familiar with current trends in technological innovation and are able to implement them in concrete projects. They are well versed in exploiting the potential of digital technologies and propose novel solutions. They can assess the individual, social and cultural implications of the use of technology, both at a general and practical level.
In academia, our graduates draw on their interdisciplinary education to apply diverse research methods in multidisciplinary projects. They engage in contemporary academic debates in the fields of media theory, social impacts of digital technologies, digital humanities, and they critically assess the role of digital technologies in defining global processes of today (geopolitical conflicts, climate change, etc.). In particular, they participate in research in the digital humanities, working in teams using big data analysis. In the field of lifelong learning, they participate in the implementation of digital technologies, including the use of computer games – a good example is the involvement of our students in the university spin-off studio Charles Games.
In the private sector, our graduates design and implement projects using new media/interactive technologies, evaluate their effectiveness, and assess the possibilities and limits of new media for specific solutions. They are proficient in handling client projects in the field of new media; client communication, teamwork and its organization. Similarly, they can work in the field of computer game design or creative forms of communication, including the design of communication strategies.
