Požadavky ke zkoušce -

Check regularly "yymmdd_jem002" file (log-in to see the file), where your fulfilled requirements are noted (including students of JEM170 and JMMZ020). To finish the course you must fulfill:

1. Attendance: You must attend all three seminars.

You must come to all 3 seminars. If you study abroad for the entire semester, you are free from this requirement, but you still have to send us details on your progress (several paragraphs; please be concrete) on the day of the seminar. The exact dates of your seminar will be specified in the file "seminar_dates" above (log-in to see the file). If you cannot attend your seminars at specified date, you can switch with your colleague but need to inform us in advance.

2. Handout: For the third seminar, you must prepare an outline for your defense and send it to us at least a day in advance.

You must prepare an outline for your thesis defense and present it to the teacher. You should address the importance of your topic, settings of the problem and hypotheses, methodological background and most of all, stress the original contribution. Send the handout one day in advance. An example can be found above under "3_IES_handout." You should take three copies of the handout with you to the defense.

3. Final thesis: You must finish your thesis till given deadlines: deadline of January 4 is for those finishing their studies in January 2019, deadline of May 10 is for those finishing their studies in June 2019, and deadline of July 31 is for those finishing studies during the prolonged examination period in September 2019. Upload your final thesis into SIS and send it to us to get credits for the seminar (include no. of characters of the main body of the thesis into your email).

Note that the deadlines mentioned above are the latest dates you need to hand in your thesis (Czech/Slovak works aim for at least 60 standard pages, 108ths. characters including spaces; English works for at least 50 standard pages, 90ths. characters including spaces, both excluding abstract, proposal, references, and appendices). Since you are not eligible for credits before you fulfill the requirement of uploading your final thesis into SIS and sending it to us by email, manage your work to be able to get your credits in time.

Rules of communication. All e-mails should be send to all of the following addresses: mejstrik@fsv.cuni.cz, tomas.havranek@fsv.cuni.cz, zuzana.havrankova@fsv.cuni.cz.

  • When submitting your thesis for seminars, save the file as yoursurname_thesis#.pdf. Subject of the e-mail must be: JEM002 Thesis (Yoursurname).
  • When submitting your final thesis for seminars, save the file as yoursurname_thesis_final.pdf. Subject of the e-mail must be: JEM002 Final Thesis (Yoursurname).
  • When submitting your handout for the third seminar, save the file as yoursurname_handout.pdf. Subject of the e-mail must be: JEM002 Handout (Yoursurname).
  • Those who study abroad will send us three reports on their progress as yoursurname_seminar#.pdf; the subject of the e-mail must be: JEM002 Progress Report (Yoursurname).

Always send the current version of your thesis (and handout) in advance, before the seminar starts. A few days after the deadline an xls file will be published on this webpage to indicate students that passed the requirement.

You are eligible for credits only if you fulfill all the course requirements. Always check for official deadlines in current academic year on FSV web.

Please, take your time and go through a few good theses which you can find on the website -- this is the best inspiration for you and it will answer a lot of your questions. Read the documents "Academic Writing" and "Handbook" above. Your thesis will be evaluated according to its quality, not the number of pages, but you have to fulfill the minimum requirements of the Faculty (50 standard pages from the Introduction to the Conclusion for theses written in English). If you think about writing your thesis in LaTeX, there is a template created specifically for the IES (attached above). Empirically there is a significant correlation between the usage of LaTeX and the final grade.

For information on final examination for master's degree, see this websiteFor the winter semester 2018/2019, final master's exams including thesis defense will be held on January 16, 2019. For the summer semester 2018/2019, the exams will be held on June 19, 2019, and for the prolonged summer period on September 16-17, 2019. Time schedule will be published one week before exam. For information on thesis defense, read IES directors' Guidelines.
