Požadavky ke zkoušce -
Poslední úprava: SCHNELLEROVA (06.04.2020)

Check regularly "yymmdd_jem001" file (log-in to see the file), where your fulfilled requirements are noted (including students of JEM169 and JMMZ019). To finish the course you must fulfill the following minimum requirements.

1. Attendance: You must attend all three seminars.

You must come to all 3 seminars. If you study abroad for the entire semester, you are free from this requirement, but you still have to send us details on your progress (several paragraphs; please be concrete) on the day of the seminar. The exact dates of your seminar will be specified in the file "seminars_dates" (log-in to see the file). If you cannot attend your seminars at specified date, you can switch with your colleague but need to inform us in advance.

2. Proposal: You must send us your thesis proposal (by email before the first seminar and, when approved after the first seminar, in hardcopy with your's and your supervisor's signature).

You must send it by email before the first seminar (that is, you should find your topic and your supervisor before the first seminar). We may ask you to make some adjustments; in that case, always send us also the new version. Once your proposal is approved at the seminar, print it, get your supervisor's signature, and deliver the signed proposal to Tomas Havranek's box at the IES (box #2). If you currently study abroad, you still have to send proposal by email and hand in signed final version (ask your supervisor to deliver the signed proposal; scanned version is acceptable for students abroad as well). We should have your signed proposal before the third seminar at the latest.

3. First Part & Data: You must send us the first part of your thesis by the end of December for winter semester or end of June for summer semester (at least 15 pages of solid text).

You must send us at least 15 standard pages (27ths. characters including spaces, excluding the abstract, cover pages, references, proposal, and appendices) showing that you are capable of producing an academic text. If you write an empirical thesis, you also need to enclose summary statistics (the means and standard errors of all variables) of your data to show that you have obtained access to the relevant data sources in time. Everything you send us is automatically checked for plagiarism. This first part must be approved by your supervisor (no official approval is required) and cannot be sent later than by the fixed deadline of December 31 or June 30. Please include zuzana.havrankova.fsvcuni@analysis.urkund.com in carbon copy of your email addressed to all 3 teachers.

Rules of communication. Unless you study abroad (in which case more obligations follow), you are required to send 2 documents to pass the course: the thesis proposal and the first part of the thesis. All e-mails should be sent to all of the following addresses: michal.mejstrik@fsv.cuni.cz, tomas.havranek@fsv.cuni.cz, zuzana.havrankova@fsv.cuni.cz.

  • Send the proposal as yoursurname_proposal.doc; the subject of the e-mail must be: JEM001 Proposal (Yoursurname), use proposal template above.
  • Send the first part of the thesis as yoursurname_firstpart.pdf; the subject of the e-mail must be: JEM001 First Part (Yoursurname).
  • Those who study abroad will send us three reports on their progress as yoursurname_seminar#.pdf; the subject of the e-mail must be: JEM001 Progress Report (Yoursurname).

Always send the current version of your thesis in advance, at least a day before the seminar starts. A few days after the deadlines an xls file will be published on this webpage to indicate students that passed the requirement.

You are eligible for credits only if you fulfill all the course requirements and convince us that you are capable of writing a good thesis by mid-May/beg-Jan. Always check for official deadlines in current academic year on FSV web.

Please, take your time and go through a few good theses which you can find on the website. Most of them include thesis proposals---this is the best inspiration for you and it will answer a lot of your questions. Read the documents "Academic Writing" and "Handbook" above. Your thesis will be evaluated according to its quality, not number of pages, but you have to fulfill the minimum requirements of the Faculty (50 standard pages from the Introduction to the Conclusion for theses written in English). If you think about writing your thesis in LaTeX, there is a template created specifically for the IES (attached above). Empirically there is a significant correlation between the usage of LaTeX and the final grade.

For information on final examination for master's degree, see this website. For the winter semester 2018/2019, final master's exams including thesis defense will be held on January 16, 2019. For the summer semester 2018/2019, the exams will be held on June 19, 2019, and for the prolonged summer period on September 16-17, 2019. Time schedule will be published one week before exam. For information on thesis defense, read IES directors' Guidelines.

Studenti jsou rozděleni do čtyř skupin podle souboru "seminars_date," každému studentovi jsou přidělena tři individuální data seminářů. Pro každý seminář si student připraví krátkou (pěti minutovou) prezentaci.

Obsah seminářů:

1. seminář - obhajoba diplomového projektu s hypotézami, student uvede jakou má výzkumnou literaturu a popíše plán přípravy textu (od června),

2. seminář - detailní popis metodologie a testování hypotéz, student popíše plán přípravy textu (od minulého semináře),

3. seminář - obhajoba první části diplomové práce, student popíše plán přípravy textu od posledních semináře a uvede podrobný plán pro příští semestr.

Student je povinen přesvědčit vyučující o správném postupu přípravy diplomové práce. První verze musí být zaslána s předstihem.

Deadline for Masters Thesis Proposals is February 8, 2019. The topic of your thesis must be confirmed by your supervisor in the Student Information System one year before the thesis defense. So if you want to defend your thesis at the end of the Winter Semester 2019/2020, your deadline is February 8, 2019 (use the "Thesis" module in SIS). You must send the proposal (following the example available on the website of JEM001 in SIS), approved by your supervisor, to mejstrik@fsv.cuni.cz, tomas.havranek@fsv.cuni.cz, and zuzana.havrankova@fsv.cuni.cz by e-mail till February 8, 2019. You can choose from a list of offered topics (the SIS and http://ies.fsv.cuni.cz/en/node/258) or come up with your own topic. In any case, you must find a suitable advisor. Please note that the supply of advisors is limited, and most of them accept students on a first come, first served basis.

Deadline for Masters Thesis Proposals is May 24, 2019. The topic of your thesis must be confirmed by your supervisor in the Student Information System one year before the thesis defense. So if you want to defend your thesis at the end of the Summer Semester 2019/2020, your deadline is May 24, 2019. Use the "Thesis (Selection of subject)" module in SIS to assign to your topic. You can choose from a list of offered topics in SIS or come up with your own topic. In any case, you must find a suitable advisor. If your topic is not on the list, ask your supervisor to publish it. We recommend you choose a narrowly defined empirical topic. You can have seven more weeks to submit the detailed thesis proposal (following the template and the example available on the website of JEM001 in SIS) if you agree on this with your supervisor ex-ante. You must send the proposal, approved by your supervisor, to mejstrik@fsv.cuni.cz, tomas.havranek@fsv.cuni.cz, and zuzana.havrankova@fsv.cuni.cz by e-mail till July 15, 2019.
