Annotation
Internal medicine – Geriatrics is taught during one-week clinical rotation at the Department of Geriatrics 1.LF and VFN in the broader context of general internal medicine. During the rotation students receive theoretical background and clinical practice and demonstrations in the form of lectures, seminars and bedside training focused on specific aspects of clinical presentation, diagnostic workout and treatment of common diseases in old age.

Welcome to the Department of Geriatrics and Internal Medicine.

Your training will be held on-site at our department, located at Šermířská 1921/4, Prague 6 – Strahov.

How to get there:

  • From Karlovo náměstí, take bus number 176 to the final stop Stadion Strahov.

  • From Metro station Dejvická, take bus 143 or 149 to the stop Koleje Strahov.

Important information

Classes start at 8:30 AM, so please make sure to allow sufficient time for your arrival.

Please bring:

  • your student ID

  • a stethoscope

  • a clean white coat for clinical demonstrations (see the course program).

The whole class will be divided into Group 1 and Group 2, which will allow us to assess and discuss geriatric patients and clinical case studies in smaller groups.

Course schedule

For each day of the rotation, we have also prepared training materials available in Moodle after you enroll in the course:

Syllabus

Definition and content of gerontology and geriatrics, organization of geriatric Services and care, education in geriatric medicine in CR and Europe.

Multimorbidity, disability, frequent geriatric syndromes; Pharmacological treatment in old age.

Comprehensive Geriatric Assessment (CGA) - health status, physical performance and self-sufficiency, nutrition, frailty, mental status, geriatric risk stratification with the use of standardized assessment tools and scales.

The most common clinical problems in geriatrics (geriatric patient with dementia/depression/delirium, patient with falls/instability, with sarcopenia, frailty, heart failure, stroke, chronic skin defects ect.)
