Course assessment methods and requirements for successful completion, grading scheme -

The exam consists of a written and an oral part.

The written part accounts for 60% of the overall assessment, while the oral part accounts for 40%.

Written part - takes place in person

  • listening comprehension
  • reading comprehension
  • grammar and vocabulary test
  • written expression (letter or essay)

A minimum of 60% is required to pass the written part of the exam. A minimum of 50% is required for each part of the test.

If a student fails one part of the test, they will be graded "fail" (grade 4), but they can retake only the part they failed in the previous test.

For the oral part of the exam, students will prepare:

  • a written summary (approx. 1 standard page) of the selected academic text + a list of 3-5 keywords with their explanation
  • a structured  spoken presentation of the chosen academic text (approx. 5 min.)

Students shall submit the academic text, summary, and keywords by email to: kristyna.svorcova@ff.cuni.cz no later than 3 days before the exam.

Oral part - takes place in person or online by arrangement (on the same day or, after agreement with the teacher, on the following days, no later than within a week)

  • analysis of the written test results
  • short introduction of the student in a foreign language and conversation in French on a topic related to the academic environment
  • structured presentation of a selected academic text in French and discussion of it
  • interpretation of excerpts selected from this specialized text by the teacher (with an emphasis on understanding the language used – summary, paraphrase, translation, list of arguments, etc.)

To pass the oral part of the exam, you must obtain at least 50%.

Oral part assessment criteria

  • structure and content of the presentation
  • fluency of speech, including correct/clear pronunciation
  • accuracy of expression (selection and use of grammatical and lexical structures)
  • interaction
  • interpretation of excerpts

Academic text (approx. 20 standard pages)

The text must relate to the field of study and contain all the essentials of a academic text (citations, footnotes, etc.). For all types of exams, we recommend consulting the suitability of the text with the teacher of the relevant language in advance. The text must come from a native speaker or be published by a reputable foreign publisher (not, for example, anonymous websites, Wikipedia, etc.) and must not be a translation from another language. The text may also be composed of two sources; in the case of photocopies, the title page with the authors' names and bibliographic information (editor, publisher, year of publication) must also be attached. It must not contain any personal notes or annotations.
Students from other faculties will choose a specialized text related to one of the fields studied at the Faculty of Arts.

A minimum of 60% is required to pass the entire exam.

For sample tests, see https://dl1.cuni.cz/course/index.php?categoryid=411.

If you have any questions, we recommend that you consult with the responsible teacher: https://jc.ff.cuni.cz/jazykove-centrum/vyucujici/svorcova-kristyna/.

The exam is intended only for students of the Faculty of Arts.
