It has long be argued that issues of cultural and gender identity are intimately interlinked. Moreover, it has been suggested that Europe has been a founding space for the articulation of racialised positions including that of whiteness. Yet, much less is known about how issues of race and gender are played out in (Central and Eastern) Europe and how they can be researched and represented. This combined lecture and seminar course addresses some theoretical debates about race, particularly the social construction of whiteness as an unmarked category of privilege and the racialisation of groups perceived as white. In terms of methodology, we will focus on some of the difficulties and dilemmas in research across difference. What are valid and topical research questions and research methods?
