"Methods and Techniques of Historical Sociology" (YDHA002) is a compulsory PhD exam without any timetabled classes.

There are two guarantors of "Methods and Techniques": Dr Alena Marková and doc. Jan Štemberk.

Therefore, students are recommended to ask each guarantor about requirements of an exam (test, oral test, written test, essay etc.). The requirements could be different.

 

Dr Alena Marková’s course completion requirements:

The first option:

Students have to prepare an essay (4 000 - 4 500 words long). It needs to contain exact references and to state all their sources, i.e. also a bibliography.

An essay has to describe methods and methodology of student PhD research. You can use following questions as the guidelines:

- deliver a short description of your doctoral thesis (field of study, specialization etc.);

- comment on why you chose the topic (motivation of the researcher, scientific relevance of the chosen topic and its topicality, etc.);

- specify the theoretical framework of your project (which literature, authors, approaches and theories are related to your topic, etc.);

- present your research questions and hypotheses, goals of the research;

- comment on the methodology of your research (including all sources, etc.);

- reflect on potential problems and their solution.

Clear, precise, and comprehensive citation is absolutely essential. There is no deadline for an essay. All references should be given in the footnotes. All cited materials should also be listed alphabetically in a bibliography at the end of an essay.

The second option how to pass "Methods and Techniques of Historical Sociology": student's book review published in some of a reputable academic double peer reviewed periodical/journal.

The choice of the book depends on student and her/his research preferences. A reviewed book should be relevant for his/her PhD thesis and research.
