This course provides a broad overview of the development of European cooperation and integration since 1945 with a specific emphasis on the accession to the European Union of the post-communist countries of Central and Eastern Europe (CEEC). The course consists of two parts: the first traces the history of European integration from 1945 onwards and analyses the institutional set-up of the European Union, its main policies and the challenges it is facing at present. The second part of the course is concerned with the efforts of CEE countries to join the EU, the difficulties that presented themselves on their way to the EU and the impact the Eastern enlargement has had to date and is likely to have in the future both on the CEE countries and the EU. The classes will be half lectures and half seminars, in which an active student role is expected (presentations, participation in discussions).

5) EU at present: Europe since the Summit in Nice, the challenges of today. European integration in crisis? Europe of peoples or Europe of elites? Decision-making in an enlarged EU. Is there a democratic deficit in the EU?

Program UPCES je semestrální výukový program pipravený spolen pro studenty amerických univerzit a studenty FHS UK. Program je spoleným projektem FHS UK a Cerge-EI a výuku zajišují tedy pednášející FHS UK a Cerge-EI. Americkým studentm je tento program nabízen jako celek, studenti FHS UK mají možnost zapsat si jednotlivé kurzy z nabídky pro daný semestr a aktivn se zapojit do doprovodných akcí a exkurzí. UPOZORNNÍ: Kurzy programu UPCES mají zkrácenou dobu registrace. REGISTRACE KONÍ 8. 10. 2006. Podrobné informace o kurzech, rozvrhu, atestacích jsou uvedeny pod kódy jednotlivých kurz. Kurzy mají více kontaktních hodin -pednáška (1x90 min), seminá (1x90 min) za týden a tzv. cviení a je teba, aby si student zapsal najednou pednášku, seminá i cviení (každé oznaeno vlastním kódem). Cviení je chápáno jako úast na konzultacích a soustavná domácí píprava, kterou tyto kurzy vyžadují. Pednášky a semináe mají vlastní rozvrh a probíhají bu v Jinonicích nebo v uebn Cerge-EI (Politických vz 7, P1). Studenti mají povinnost opatit si k jednotlivým kurzm pedepsané READING MATERIALS, s nimiž se pravideln pracuje pi výuce, a které jsou nezbytné pro soustavnou domácí pípravu. Tyto materiály jsou k dispozici on-line (http://www.cerge-ei.cz/upces_data/) a v tištné podob v knihovnách v Jinonicích (studovna pes ulici) a Cerge-EI. On-line materiály jsou pístupné po zadání hesla, které zaregistrovaní studenti obdrží e-mailem. Souástí programu jsou také jednodenní nebo vícedenní exkurze a doprovodné akce. Kalendá akcí je k dispozici na http://www.cerge-ei.cz/abroad/calendar/ Podrobné informace o exkurzích a doprovodných akcích budou zapsaným studentm rozesílány prostednictvím e-mailu.
