Can economics that is very abstract and a-historical provide any understanding of historical phenomena? This course tries to provide an answer from several different perspectives. We will read samples of essential texts on the topic and thus cover the long period from Karl Marx's theory of history to Brynjolfsson's vision of the second machine age that makes 'materialist' measures like GDP obsolete. Discussion and class participation are key requirements in the course.
