The Theoretical-Methodological Seminar is typically attended by students during the first two years of their studies
and is primarily aimed at deepening knowledge in sociological research methodology (quantitative and qualitative approaches) and discussing current theoretical and methodological issues in the field. The seminar includes primarily the following activities: • Instruction in advanced methods of data processing and analysis, and mastery of new software tools; • Reading and discussion of current theoretical and methodological texts; • Lectures by internal and external experts, including international guests; • Discussion of issues related to the theoretical and methodological foundations of dissertation projects; • Advanced methodology of scientific work. The seminar consists of 10 teaching hours per semester. Topics are selected each semester from a long-term offer and in response to current opportunities (e.g., visits by international experts). Seminars may also be conducted in collaboration with other partners, such as the Institute of Sociology of the Czech Academy of Sciences, the Faculty of Social Sciences at Charles University, 4EU+, etc. Students themselves also contribute to the selection of topics for each semester to ensure that the seminars meet their current academic preferences. Students may also attend seminars, workshops, or summer schools of a similar nature at other institutions; the recognition of these activities for course fulfillment is approved by the chair of the subject-area board.
