Anotace

The next year of the annual Prague-Munich Old Norse student conference will be devoted to all kinds of paranormal and unusual mental phenomena as described in Old Norse literature. Be it a mania induced by divine or demoniac being, be it a famous Germanic battle fury (furor teutonicus of Roman historians, berserkrgangr of Old Norse sagas), be it love-sickness, be it a completely normal manic depression, schizophrenia, paranoia, ADHD or autism as we experience them in growing ratio today.
Old Norse literature touches the subject often: insanity is a matter of interest in all kinds of sagas, historical works, lawbooks and poetry. Thus it offers many interesting points to be discussed: the way how these states of mind are described, how is their interpretation in the eyes of society (Is it an illness? Is it a divine interference?), the legal status of insane persons, the way of healing, the treatment of the madmen and - not least – madness as a literary motive. Old Norse literature and Old Norse society should represent the core of the conference; however, contributions focusing on similar phenomena in neighbouring literatures (Old English, Old Irish, premodern Finnish etc) are welcome.
The conference will consist of students‘contributions on the subject, whose length should be approximately 20-30 minutes (in English). Only active participation is allowed (i.e. it is necessary to give a paper in order to take part in the conference). It is possible to participate only after preliminary agreement with organizers; the interested participants are cordially invited to contact [e-mail] not later than 1.2. 2026.
The conference will take place at the Institut für Nordische Philologie of the Ludwig-Maximilians University in Munich from Monday 15. to Wednesday 17.6. 2026. The expected arrival is Sunday 14.7., the expected departure Wednesday 17.6. after 15.00. The accommodation will be organized, travel costs as well as accommodation costs will be covered by the organizers, and however, at least a part of them will be reimbursed later.
