The period from the 10th to 13th centuries has been a turbulent time in East Asian history. The new powers established by the Kitans, Tanguts, Jurchens, and Mongols challenged the Sino-centric world order and claimed their civilizational independence. Nevertheless, the newly established “conquest dynasties” often implemented many expects of the Chinese civilization in their political, cultural, and religious life. The course “Readings in China-Tangut Relations: The Great Xia and the Middle Kingdom” is intended to incorporate primary Tangut and Chinese materials in the study of political, social, and religious interactions between the Northern Song Dynasty and the Tangut Xia. The course combines lectures on various topics of Sino-Tangut relations (ideology, culture, religion, law) and practical sessions, when the students will have a chance to work with authentic Tangut and Chinese materials. The elementary knowledge of Tangut and Classical Chinese will be helpful, but not required. The classes will be conducted online (Zoom) on Fridays (14:00-15:30). <br>
