The course consists of thirteen lectures. We would like to present to the students the comparative research of the female
authors at the beginning of Slovene modernism. We would like to put into focus forgotten Slovene female poets and their poetry from this period, thus offering a critical view into the creations of Slovene female authors of the “moderna” era (with reference to the broader fin-de- siècle period). The interdisciplinary research extends to the field of cultural studies and history, complemented by feminist literary studies and methods of contextualisation. The research of ego- documents provides a great help in the research of the context. The analysis of their poetry also reveal their creation in a broader context, since the literary texts of female authors cannot be researched outside of the cultural-historical context. As such I would like to present also the reception of their literary works by their contemporaries, which, in the patriarchal environment of the Slovene society of that period, was restrictive and unfair to their unique voices. The lectures focus on the literary work of four representative female poets of the Slovenian “moderna” period: Vida Jeraj (1875–1932), Ljudmila Poljanec (1874–1948), Kristina Šuler (1866- 1959) and Lili Novy (1885–1958). 1. Slovenian poetry in the 19th century. Fin de siècle period. 2. Slovene “moderna” (the beginning of modernism) and the development of poetry. 3. Cultural and literary life in the Austro-Hungary. The cultural life in Vienna, Trieste, Prague, Budapest and Zagreb… Writers as cultural nomads. Two language identities of Slovenian writers. Intercultural connections. 4. New woman and the writer’s circle around the newspaper Slovenka (Slovenian woman). Slovenian female poets. 5. Male censorship of Slovene women writers at the end of the 19th century in the Slovene culture. 6. Slovene female poet Vida Jeraj and her lyrical voice. 7. Decadence and impressionism in her poetry. 8. The first Slovenian lesbian female poet Ljudmila Poljanec and her poetry. 9. Love poetry of Nataša Šuler. 10. The phenomenon of Slovene-German poet Lily Novy. 11. The crisis of identity : doppelgängers in her poetry. 12.
