The aim of this seminar is to examine the concepts of norms, standard varieties/standard languages, and the processes of linguistic standardization and de-standardization from a sociolinguistic perspective. The focus is on methodological issues. Standard varieties are not only a grammatical-structural phenomenon, but above all a sociolinguistic and ideological one. In the seminar, the traditional question of what is/is not standard language or standard is transformed into another: who decides about what belongs to the standard variety, how, under what circumstances, and with what consequences? The standard variety is (re)constituted in various power constellations, which must be explored qualitatively. Since such processes do not proceed as a linear increase in standardization and therefore do not represent a one-way street, we will also deal with linguistic de-standardization and demoticization. In the case of German, these research aspects are specifically related to its pluricentric or pluriareal character.
