This course examines various aspects of Iranian cinema, including its turbulent history, its unique aesthetics, various forms of its visual language and its depiction of life and culture. Selected texts, documentaries, feature films and shorts provide a gateway to more general discussions about Iran’s artistic and political relations within film.

In addition to watching parts of films within the classes, the students are required to read chapters of books and articles that are assigned to them prior to each session. Class discussions will make a major part of each session, providing the necessary contexts for understanding the various universes portrayed in Iranian cinema over the last hundred years.
