This lecture series explores medieval women’s life experiences within their historical, social, and cultural contexts, with particular attention to the diverse roles women played in medieval society and the strategies they used when they negotiated power and authority in a world where their opportunities were often shaped and limited by misogynistic attitudes. These roles are examined through a selection of representative texts, written both by and for women, including devotional texts and spiritual guides, conduct literature, romances, poems by troubadours and trobairitz, and the texts that respond to and challenge ideas that were critical of women.
