The seminar introduces students to the problem of Christian symbols and symbolism; the general problem of
symbol and religious symbolism will be dealt with during the analysis of phenomenology of some Christian
symbols (as for example cross, nimbus, aureola; symbols of Trinity, Holy Ghost, Virgin Mary; common attributes
given to angels, apostles, and saints).

3) The Symbols of the Trinity.
4) The Nimbus and the Aureole.
5) The Symbol of the Cross and Crucifixion. The Sacred monograms.

7) The Symbols of the Archangels and the Angels
8) The Symbols of the Evangelists
9) The Symbols of the Apostles.
10) The Symbols of the more important Saints.
11) The Symbols of the Devil and Daemons.
12) The lesser symbolism.

At the end of this course, students should be able to: Explain the concept of symbols and symbolism, particularly religious symbolism, and their role in Christian tradition, theology, and visual culture. Describe and interpret major Christian symbols related to Jesus Christ, the Trinity, the Virgin Mary, angels, saints, and the Cross using basic iconographic vocabulary. Analyse selected Christian symbols by relating their historical development, theological meaning, and artistic representation across different periods. Differentiate between symbolic representations and doctrinal beliefs in Christianity, demonstrating respect for religious diversity and cultural contexts. Communicate interpretations of Christian symbols clearly in written or oral form using appropriate academic and ethical language. Demonstrate awareness of the role of religious symbols in shaping values, identity, and moral imagination within societies and intercultural settings.
