The course deals with the development of the profession of architect and builder (on specific examples) against the background of the cultural-historical development of the Czech lands in the 19th and the 20th century. First, general aspects of the development of architectural and building education, administration and law in the Habsburg Monarchy will be presented. Second, the professional and social rise of this social group will be monitored against the background of the formation of the national identity of the Czech and German ethnic groups in the second half of the 19th century. Third, the course will focus on the role of architects and builders in the first phase of building the Czechoslovak state in the first half of the 20th century. Fourth, new urban concepts, trends in heritage conservation, and the influences of social housing will be assessed in the context of modern Czech society until 1990´s.

Podmínky zakončení předmětu

1) Compulsory attendance (75%)

2) Presentation of a selected architect person (10-15 min)

3) Final essay:

• The final essay of 2 pages is written at the last meeting based on 4 thematic areas from the lectures and study literature.

Use of AI tools is permissible only as support for research, linguistic and stylistic proofreading or structuring of the text, not as a substitute for authorial work. Students are required to state in the text whether, how, why and which specific tools were used in the preparation of the essay. Students must be able to explain, verify and defend all parts of the text for which they bear authorial responsibility. • Understand the development of the sociocultural role of the architect in individual stages of Czech modern history. 

• Describe modern Czech-German relations in the field of cultural history. 

• Assess the professional and social rise of architects and builders on specific cases. 

• Evaluate individual development trends in urban planning, heritage preservation and social housing in the Czech modern society.
