After the fall of the Soviet bloc, former satellite states in Eastern Europe attempted to re-establish their identity through externalizing their Soviet past and distancing from Russia. To that end, framing the Moscow-dominated period in their national histories as colonial experience proved useful. Variegated applications of postcolonial studies on the post-Soviet space gained wide currency in Poland, the Baltic states, and - to a certain extent - Ukraine and Belarus, in the 1990s and 2000s.

However, the accession of the external parts of the Russian/Soviet empire to Euroatlantic structures, most importantly, to the EU and NATO, had twofold consequences for the postcolonial debates: 1) their political instrumentalization lost their urgency due to the perceived mitigation of the Kremlin threat; 2) a new wave of othering from the side of Western partners, as well as intellectual collaboration with the Western Leftists, urged new interpretations of Western colonialism vis-à-vis its East as the main internal Other. Throughout this dynamics, ‘classical’ postcolonial studies – centered around former maritime empires and their overseas possessions – remained largely closed to East European interpretations as ideologically incompatible with the post- and decolonial ‘mainstream’.

Russian full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022, swiftly qualified as a “colonial war” (Timothy Snyder), produced a new twist in old debates and generated new arguments on the applicability of the postcolonial approach to the post-Soviet space. Russian neo-imperial conquest against the unfolding peripheralization of Europe enables new interpretations, capable of enriching both Area and postcolonial studies, which presents the core objective of the course. Such an endeavour, however, requires a new vocabulary and conceptual refinements as regards the postcolonial condition, anti-colonial struggle, and the decolonization of minds and knowledge in and on the region.

The course is open only for students of master's degree programmes.

Po pádu sovětského bloku se bývalé satelitní státy ve východní Evropě snažily znovu vybudovat svou identitu prostřednictvím externalizace své sovětské minulosti a distancování se od Ruska. V tomto smyslu se ukázalo jako užitečné rámovat období dominované Moskvou v jejich národních dějinách jako koloniální zkušenost. Různorodé aplikace postkoloniálních studií na postsovětský prostor se v 90. letech a ve 2000s široce uplatnily v Polsku, pobaltských státech a do určité míry také na Ukrajině a v Bělorusku.

Avšak přistoupení vnějších částí ruského/sovětského impéria k euroatlantickým strukturám, zejména k EU a NATO, mělo dvojí důsledky pro postkoloniální debaty: 1) jejich politická instrumentalizace ztratila naléhavost kvůli vnímanému zmírnění hrozby Kremlu; 2) nová vlna „otheringu“ ze strany západních partnerů, stejně jako intelektuální spolupráce se západními levicovými kruhy, vyžadovala nové interpretace západního kolonialismu vůči jeho Východu jako hlavního vnitřního „Jiného“. V rámci této dynamiky zůstaly „klasické“ postkoloniální studie – zaměřené na bývalé námořní říše a jejich zámořská území – do značné míry uzavřeny vůči východoevropským interpretacím, jelikož byly ideologicky neslučitelné s post- a dekoloniálním „mainstreamem“.

Ruská plnohodnotná invaze na Ukrajinu v roce 2022, rychle kvalifikovaná jako „koloniální válka“ (Timothy Snyder), přinesla nový zvrat do starých debat a vytvořila nové argumenty o aplikovatelnosti postkoloniálního přístupu na postsovětský prostor. Ruský neoirredentistický a neoimperiální útok proti postupující periferizaci Evropy umožňuje nové interpretace, které mohou obohatit jak studia regionů, tak postkoloniální studie, což představuje hlavní cíl kurzu. Takové úsilí však vyžaduje novou slovní zásobu a konceptuální upřesnění týkající se postkoloniálního stavu, antikoloniálního boje a dekolonizace mysli a znalostí v regionu i o něm.

Cíl předmětu - angličtina

The course is aimed at analyzing the existing body of literature, complex conceptual apparatus, and new arguments in the postcolonial studies on Eastern Europe, as well as their efficiency and limitations against the current context of the Russian aggression. The underlying theoretical premise is that the structure of coloniality/oppression in the region is tripartite, where the symbolic West and Russia form two oppressive poles with divergent strategies of domination and resulting scales of difference. Whereas (former) subalterns can adopt various strategies in volatile contemporary settings.

The course has an overtly theoretical orientation. It is structured around focused discussions of assigned sources.

Upon completion of this course, students should be able to:

  • provide arguments about imbrications of postcolonialism and postsocialism in Eastern Europe;
  • master the conceptual apparatus that emerged out of this overlap: inter-imperiality, ambicoloniality, a subaltern empire, self-colonization, perverse decolonization, de-imperialization, the West – East slope of merits, nesting orientalism, etc.;
  • discuss postcolonial bandwagoning and its limitations;
  • discuss alternative taxonomies of Europe rooted in economic vs cultural exploitation;
  • explicate existing hierarchies of knowledge production on Eastern Europe and systemic distortions in Area Studies;
  • discuss the role of imperial/colonial past in contemporary identity building in Central/Eastern Europe;
  • highlight ideological discrepancies in East European postcolonial studies;
  • discuss the colonial aspects of the ongoing Russian war of aggression in Ukraine and its decolonial effects on the post-Soviet domain.

Detailed description of the assignments

 

·         Active Class Participation (20%)

Students should participate actively in the course. Mere attendance is not active participation. To take active part in the class means, for instance, to present findings from compulsory readings, to comment on the topic, to discuss with other students, to answer questions raised by the instructor, and to raise one’s own questions.    

·         Presentation (40%)

Every student must make one presentation during the semester, which could be either theoretical or practical (relevant to the session topic and built on the assigned theoretical readings). Students can team up for a small group (2-3 members) presentation if there are not enough timeslots and topics for all the enrolled students to present. Theoretical presentation is a broader overview and a deeper analysis of literature, relevant for the class topic. Practical presentation presumes the analysis of some cultural product (a book, a song, a movie, etc), produced in Eastern European region, from the postcolonial perspective. Presentation should take about 15-20 minutes.

·         Final project (40%)

During the semester, every student must conduct a research project, which consists in picking a cultural product (movie, song(s), videos, paintings) or a clusters of products that bear a colonial/imperial imprint and to analyse them from the postcolonial perspective. It could have ethnic, national, or regional relevance / sphere of circulation. The project should be presented and defended in class at the end of the semester (there will be several sessions allocated for that in the end of the course).

We adhere to the policy of zero tolerance to plagiarism and AI use.

Maximum two absences during the semester could be excused.

Metody výuky - angličtina

The course is theory-driven: its main objective is to master and develop a proper post- and decolonial vocabulary for analysing the developments and sentiments in the region.

Class work is built around focused discussions of assigned sources. Autonomous work with literature and peer learning are implied.

All the assigned sources will be provided on Moodle.

Some guest lectures are planned in the format "the author meets the audience".

The class presentation is a deeper elaboration of the further literature, assigned for the session, backed by PowerPoint slides. 

The practical project is wired towards the application of the post- and decolonial methodology to the analysis of cultural materials: literary, media, visual sources.

Zero tolerance to plagiarism and AI use (may it be more 'rough' in style but present your genuine contribution).

Use of generative AI tools:

The use and citation of generative AI tools (such as ChatGPT or MS Copilot) in seminar papers and other coursework must comply with the decrees of the IMS Director No. 7/2023 and 9/2023.

Generative AI tools may be used unless explicitly prohibited by the instructor. However, they may not be used to generate substantial sections of the text or replace the student’s own intellectual contribution. The student remains fully responsible for any content generated with assistance of AI tools.

Presenting AI-generated content, whether verbatim, rephrased, or only slightly modified, as one's own work constitutes plagiarism.

Every submitted paper must include a transparent statement specifying which generative AI tools were used, in which stage of the work they were employed, and how they were used, or confirming that no generative AI tools were used. If this statement is missing or incomplete, the instructor is not permitted to accept the paper for evaluation.

Unless the instructor explicitly prohibits the use of generative AI tools, the decision to use or not to use them rests fully with the student. The student has the right to request that the instructor does not use AI assistance for evaluating their work.

Vstupní požadavky - angličtina

This is an MA level course, therefore strong analytical skills and the ability to work with academic literature are requested.

Whereas the preexisting experience of work with postcolonial studies is not mandatory, a certain level of attunement to its sophisticated vocabulary would be needed.

Sufficient English language skills stand as an entry requirement: discussions in class will be held in English, and most ascribed sources are in English, too.
