Preliminary Description
This course is designed to explore the overlap between the dominate Hollywood narrative and that of the populist "Tea Party" movement in the United States. It is my contention that both Hollywood films and the Tea Party movement have adopted a vague sort of populism and nativism that allows almost anyone to be consider as "ordinary folks" and almost anyone else to be considered as part of the "elite." In this class, we will look at the speeches and writing of Tea Party spokespeople and at the narrative lines of the major Hollywood films in the last few years. The course will be part lecture and part seminar, and will be loosely structured so that student interests and ideas can be accommodated. The course will begin with a discussion of the ideas of film narratives, the U.S. political scene, and the idea of political and national identities. I am particularly interested in a discussion of how the media and politics in the U.S. can be related to the media and politics in the Czech Republic. Poslední úprava: Hájek Martin, doc. Course Requirements total points Grades: One Short Paper 50 Research Proposal 50 Research Paper 100 200
Short Paper
The short paper will be a reaction to paper to a film shown in class. The purpose of the paper is to get a sense of student interests, perspectives, and writing styles. This will be one page long.
Research Proposal and Paper
Students will be expected to conduct research on Hollywood (and Hollywood style) movies. The focus of the course is on narratives about worldviews, the nature of society, and values and so that should be the focus of the student papers.
Students will turn in a research proposal outlining their ideas and their methodologies (i.e. how the content will be analyzed, how the sample will be selected, etc.) The research proposal will be two to three pages long.
The research paper is expected to be approximately seven to ten pages long, and to be in standard research paper format, containing the following sections: introduction, literature review, methodology section, findings, and conclusion. Poslední úprava: Hájek Martin, doc. Mgr., Ph.D. (09.09.2010)
