The course is mainly focused on so called New Urban Sociology, a stream of urban studies organized around an integrated paradigm, the sociospatial perspective. It comes from the original roots of urban sociology, but gives stronger accent on more radical perspective. It examines the role played by social factors such as race, class, gender, lifestyle, economics, and culture in the context of the development of metropolitan areas, and integrates social, ecological and political-economical perspectives and research. The course follows its unique perspective, through which it maps concise history of urban life, introduces a clear summary of urban social theory, and gives attention to the impact of culture on urban development. Special focus of the course will be given on the possibilities of radical urban theory in the post-socialist context, and except classical seminar lectures, the course brings special interactivities through excoursions, movie screening and a guest lecture. |

The goals of the course are as following: -To provide an overview of selected sociological approaches to the city -To show inter-relations in the sociological examination of the city -To develop the ability of critical scientific grasp of the urban and get knowledge of the key koncepts
-To focus on the socio-spatial perspective and be able to perceive the interconnection between the physical and social space
-To understand current processes tied to global capitalism and its urban manifestations
-To create an environment for critical discussion on current urban topics |

To finish the course successfully it is required: to be present on the seminars and excourses (maximum 2 absences allowed) to write a seminar essay on selected topic (5 – 8 standard pages)
- specific problems observed in the city; theoretical essay; use of minimum 3 texts discussed in the course (+ minimum 5 sources in general) - necessary to announce and consult the essay topic by 15th December to pass a short test on the discussed topics and mandatory readings
- ca 20 minutes, open questions; 1st term on the last lesson Voluntarily it is possible to prepare short presentations on the seminars (serves as an equivalent of the seminar essay) - 10 – 15 minutes on the mandatory/recommended prescribed readings (NOT on Gottdiener) -> summary of the text + ideas for its use in current urban life |

Contemporary cities are the key arenas of the global streams of capital, people and information. It is predicted, that by 2030, about 70 % of world population is going to live in cities. They have become the places of almost all important processes tied to global neoliberalism; therefore, the structure of cities is changing and is becoming more and more adopted to the requirements of 21st century capitalism. Processes like gentrification, mass touristification, commercialization, financialization and commodification of housing are now typical for cities around the world. Therefore also the sociological examination of urban areas needs a shift towards a global and critical perspective on one hand, and closer focus on the relationship between social actors and space and their mutual influencing on the other.
