Students will be equipped with knowledge about the impact of the multiple crises the EU has suffered in the last decade and the present challenges for the European governance and EU’s legitimacy. Politicization, differentiation and the risk of disintegration will be considered as some main topics. The possibility of institutional change and EU treaty revision will be also taken into consideration and discussed on the basis of empirical evidences collected from the Legislatures.

This Master elective by guest lecturer Dr. Sabrina Cavatorto (University of Siena). Dr. Sabrina Cavatorto, guest lecturer, University of Siena is Assistant Professor of Political Science at the Department of Social, Political and Cognitive Sciences (Dispoc), University of Siena, Italy. She teaches “European Union Politics” and “Public policy analysis and impact assessment”. In the period 2015-2018 she coordinated a Jean Monnet Module titled Representation in the EU: ACTing Multilevel Democracy http:// eureact.unisi.it/). She is a member of the teaching staff of the PhD in Political Science – Comparative and European Politics and was the Coordinator of the Master Programme in European Politics and Society (MAPSiE – University of Siena). She carries out research in the field of European governance and public policy, and is now particularly interested in the analysis of public discourse in the making of policies. She writes on the Europeanization of Italy, the policy of better regulation and the Parliamentarisation and politicisation of the European Union.

MODULE 2 (4 hours): Institutional change and the “existential” crisis of the European Union: insights from the new legislature, elites attitudes and the public opinion.

MODULE 3 (4 hours): The Europeanization of National Parliaments and the problem of political representation in a multi-level polity as the European Union.
