This series of four lectures presents a survey of the causes of political violence in three areas. While the first lecture deals with the determinants of inter-state war and the problem of political violence in general, the second and third deal with human rights violations and one-sided violence including genocides and massacres. The last lecture addresses the issues of civil war and asymmetric conflicts including terrorism. The lectures will particularly discuss where the causes of conflict overlap and where separate explanations for a particular form of violence are necessary.
