This seminar provides an insight into the role of technology for global politics. Theoretically, we focus on constructivist theories, Actor-Network Theory and the socio-technological imaginaries. In that sense the seminar offers a view into the field of science and technology studies. Empirically, we will discuss the role of digital technology for security, algorithmic governance and disinformation. Students should be interested in reading and discussing theoretical texts and good knowledge of political and social theory is an advantage. |

The course will equip students with a good understanding of current IR debates on the politics of technology. Furthermore, the course will allow students to assess the role of contemporary technologies and improve their analytical skills. |

Assessment:
Take Home Exam: The exam will be handed out in week 9. Students will have about 5 days to work on it. The exam covers all material that has been covered in class until that point. Students will have to write about 2.500 words. Response Paper: Students will have to write three short response papers for three different sessions (each max. 500 words). Ideally, a response paper first summarizes the text briefly (!). The student should then develop their own thought in the form of a question, point of critique or relate it to a previous reading covered in class. For the first session students are welcome to write a paper that counts as a wild card. I will grade the paper, but students can choose to write two more papers and the grade for this first paper will thus not count. Texts marked with an * cannot be used for a response paper. |
