1. Course objectives

The course is designed specifically for Master's students of social sciences - especially those interested in the theoretical/philosophical underpinning of social phenomena, such as the function of doxastic beliefs (political, ethical, religious, aesthetic beliefs which of their nature cannot be empirically verified or falsified) and the nature of the bonds within the communities defined by shared doxastic beliefs and identity narratives. This course aims at introducing students to hotly debated issues in the interdisciplinary field of religious studies which brings philosophical, sociological and psychological methodologies to bear on the questions pertaining to the understanding of the place and function of religions in modern societies and globalising world. Since the famous 'secularisation thesis' that predicted rapid disappearance of religious sensibiities and attitudes in developed societies has been largely discredited, giving way to a far more complex picture of the reasons or motives of religious belief and religious committment (not necessarily of supernatural kind), an interdisciplinary effort is being made to understand the profound impact of religious beliefs and affiliations appear to hold on the actions of billions of people in their cultural, social and political millieu. Since we seem to be at a threshold  of the Global Age in which diversity of political, moral or religious beliefs within cultures and across cultures will - in the increasingly interconnected world - be a challenge that it will be impossible to ignore, this course adopts a novel 'global approach' to philosophy of religion, giving equal weight to the beliefs and ideas emerging from diverse religious traditions, including those dominant in Asia which is inhabited by more than half of the population of the globe.

3. Teaching methodology

The course consists of lectures conducted in part in the seminar style, therefore students are expected to do the class reading before the lecture and participate actively in the class discussions.
