The course aims to present the US party system, its development and current structure. It provides the analysis of party structures and functions and examines the attempts of third parties to enter the system. It looks into the origins of the Tea Party movement, its impact on American politics, and on Republican Party in particular. Through the account of issues and values among polarizing US electorate, the course explains the party politics of nominating candidates in recent elections and lessons the parties learn for the future.

Upon completion of the course, the students will be familiar with the party system of the United States of America  through studying the political parties functioning within the system, challenges the third parties make, and should understand the grassroots movement that reflects the polarization among the electorate and puts pressure on established political parties thus increasing the factionalism within the parties.

There will be a short written test during at the end of the last class consisting of identification of basic concepts, understanding of relevant terms and responding to short statements related to the class discussion.

By April 15th, the  essay covering a debate topic of interest  dealing with the course contents will be due by e-mail.  The essay should should consist of  four pages of standard format or 1000  words approx.
