Anotace

This course discusses selected hot issues, problems and developments in the Central-East Europe and post-Soviet area.

Požadavky ke zkoušce

Course requirements include attendance and class participation, a class presentation, and a final paper.

Attendance and active class participation are required as the course is designed as a seminar. Students are allowed to miss no more than one week. A legitimate explanation must be provided for any further absence. Should a student be unable to deliver his of her scheduled presentation, he or she is requested to inform the instructor well in advance so the course can be rescheduled accordingly. Failure to deliver the assigned presentation will result in failure of the course.

Students are requested to consult with the instructor on the topic of their presentation, which shall correspond to one of the thematic areas covered by the course as listed below (due October 15, 2013). After an in-class presentation, students are required to turn in their presentations in writing based on comments voiced during the class discussion. The papers are to be sent to the respective instructor. The written presentations should be approximately three to five pages long and contain a list of consulted sources. 

The final paper should be eight to ten pages long. It is important that for your final paper you chose a different regional focus from that of your in-class presentation. The paper must be appropriately referenced, contain a list of consulted sources and conform to the standards of academic writing. The papers are to be sent to the respective instructor (due January 6, 2014). The students are requested to discuss the topic of their final papers with the respective instructors. Assignments for the final paper are to be agreed upon with the respective instructor (due October 31, 2013). 

All submission deadlines for papers are obligatory. Students must pass all assignments in order to pass the course. Papers will be assessed based on the first draft submitted.

There is a zero tolerance in regard to plagiarism. Misconduct will result in failure of the course and further action.
