This course provides a general introduction to the history of Portugal, with emphasis on the contemporary period. It proposes an overview of the long-term Portuguese worldwide interrelations, and its close connection with the evolution of home politics, society and culture.

By the end of the course students should attain a basic understanding of the Portuguese historical process, and should be able to relate the past events with current political state of affairs, lusophone culture and national identity.
