Kurz je určen studentům bakalářského i magisterského studia politologie a mezinárodních vztahů. Jeho cílem je v těsné spolupráci se studenty rozvíjet nejen jejich komunikační kompetence a jazykové dovednosti, ale výběrem obsahově odpovídajícího a lingvisticky bohatého materiálu přispět též k jejich profesionálnímu růstu.
Hlavní role je připisována práci s anglickými autentickými texty, skupinové práci na krátkodobých projektech s důrazem na rozšiřování odborné slovní zásoby, formální slovní projev a v neposlední řadě na rozvoj schopnosti reflektovat, co studentům v učení se odbornému jazyku pomáhá a proč.

The aim of this course is to give learners a communicative competence in the target language corresponding to their needs and professional interests. This course assigns a central role to interaction with English authentic texts (relevant to prospective political scientists) in English. The topics dealt with week by week (concerning e.g. globalization, war, peace process, European Union etc.) will be explored in group discussions and/or workshop activities.
There is no single textbook for this course. Details will be given and texts supplied by the teacher as the course progresses.

Cílem kurzu je rozvíjet komunikační kompetence a jazykové dovednosti, které pomohou studentům ve studiu jejich oboru. Zároveň se studenti v kurzu seznámí se specifiky jazyka používaného v akademickém prostředí, zejména při ústních prezentacích, simulovaných debatách a psaní (academic speech and writing).

Studenti si osvojují slovní zásobu a jazykové dovednosti prostřednictvím studia odborných textů. Důraz se klade na čtení, nicméně během vlastních hodin i na komunikaci, výměnu informací a názorů ve dvojicích nebo v malých skupinách, týmovou i individuální práci.

Content-based language learning
Students get acquainted with the specific vocabulary and its content on the basis of texts. Reading is crucial, nevertheless the emphasis is also laid on communication, the exchange of information and negotiations. The method used is pair work, group work or sometimes individual work.

PODMÍNKY KE SLOŽENÍ ZKOUŠKY:
a) Závěrečná zkouška z jazyka se skládá ze dvou písemných testů pokrývajících slovní zásobu klíčovou pro oblast politologie a mezinárodních vztahů a prověřujících jazykové dovednosti získané v hodinách (ukázka testu v SIS - Soubory). Ústní projev bude ohodnocen během povinných 5minutových prezentací, které studenti přednesou v hodinách.
b) Studenti, kteří se rozhodli semináře nenavštěvovat, mají za povinnost i) napsat během semestru dva výše zmíněné testy, a ii) v průběhu semestru přednést před třídou 10minutovou ústní prezentaci, která bude ohodnocena jako součást závěrečné zkoušky; studenti jsou povinni si sami domluvit datum a téma prezentací s vyučujícím na začátku semestru.

THE EXAM
1. The final exam will consist of two written tests covering the vocabulary crucial to the field of political science and testing the writing and listening skills acquired in the lessons; the speaking skills will have been assessed prior to the exam in the course of compulsory 5-minute-long oral presentations given by students in class.
2. Students may decide, for whatever reason, not to attend the course. They must, however, i) take the two exam tests, and ii) give a 10-minute-long oral presentation in class, which will be assessed as a part of the final exam; it is the students' responsibility to see the teacher to set the date and topic of the presentations.
THE EXAM TESTS: Points - 80, time limit - 80 minutes, pass level - 70%.
PART I C-test (15 points)
Tests general understanding and use of grammatical structures in the context.
PART II Vocabulary Test ( 40 points)
Examples: definitions, collocations, fixed expressions, synonyms, word-formation, semantics, gap filling, etc.
PART III Listening Comprehension Test (15 points)
A short audio piece and 5 questions testing understanding (TRUE/FALSE, gap-fill, pick the best summary of the recording).
PART IV Writing Test (10 points)
A short essay - ca.100 words
