Seminar 2 (second semester) is for all students of master’s degree programs including NEF, MEF, and MFDA (courses under JEM002 and JEM214 codes), CSF (JEM223 and JEM170), and IMESS (JMMZ020). Check regularly "yymmdd_seminar2" file (regularly updated in Moodle), where we record the requirements you fulfilled.

Please, make sure you login to Moodle 2 (https://dl2.cuni.cz/course/view.php?id=4187) which will serve as a platform for file uploads:

  • Have your latest draft of your thesis uploaded in Moodle before your seminar comes up (you are obliged to attend three seminars so there should be three files uploaded).
  • Have your defense handout uploaded in Moodle before your third seminar comes up (reflecting the latest state of your thesis but we expect you already have your results and the supporting arguments prepared).
  • Have the final thesis uploaded in Moodle (include the number of characters) and in SIS by the given faculty deadlines. We recommend submitting the final thesis at least 5 working days before the deadline.

To finish the course you must fulfill:

1. Attendance: You must attend all three seminars.

In the summer semester of 21/22, the seminars will be held in person. You must be present at all 3 seminars. The exact dates of your seminar are specified in the file "yymmdd_seminars_dates" (in Moodle). If you cannot attend your seminars on a specified date, you can switch with your colleague but need to inform us in advance. If you study abroad (or have relevant health reasons that prevent you to attend in person), follow the instructions in the uploaded file "5_students_abroad". Always upload the current version of your thesis in advance, at least a day before the seminar starts.

2. Handout: For the third seminar, you must prepare an outline for your defense and upload it to Moodle at least a day in advance.

You must prepare an outline for your thesis defense and present it to the teacher. You should address the importance of your topic, settings of the problem and hypotheses, methodological background, and most of all, stress the original contribution. Upload the handout one day in advance. An example can be found above under "3_IES_handout." You should take three copies of the handout with you to the defense.

3. Final thesis: You must finish your thesis till given deadlines: the deadline of January 4 is for those finishing their studies in January 2022, the deadline of May 3 is for those finishing their studies in June 2022, and the deadline of August 2 is for those finishing studies during the prolonged examination period in September 2022. Upload your final thesis into SIS and into Moodle to get credits for the seminar (include no. of characters of the main body of the thesis).

Note that the deadlines are the latest dates you need to hand in your thesis (Czech/Slovak works aim for at least 60 standard pages, 108ths. characters including spaces; English works for at least 50 standard pages, 90ths. characters including spaces, both excluding abstract, proposal, references, and appendices). Since you are not eligible for credits before you fulfill the requirement of uploading your final thesis into SIS and into Moodle, manage your work to be able to get your credits in time.

Always upload the current version of your thesis (and handout) in advance, before the seminar starts. A few days after the deadline an xlsx file will be published on this webpage to indicate students that passed the requirement.

You are eligible for credits only if you fulfill all the course requirements. Always check for official deadlines in current academic year on FSV web.

Please, take your time and go through a few good theses which you can find on the website -- this is the best inspiration for you and it will answer a lot of your questions. Read the documents "Academic Writing" and Bellemare (2020) above. Your thesis will be evaluated according to its quality, not the number of pages, but you have to fulfill the minimum requirements of the Faculty (50 standard pages from the Introduction to the Conclusion for theses written in English). If you think about writing your thesis in LaTeX, there is a template created specifically for the IES (attached above). Empirically there is a significant correlation between the usage of LaTeX and the final grade.

For information on the final examination for master's degree, see this website at https://ies.fsv.cuni.cz/en/node/219 (what to hand in, where, when, and how). For information on thesis defense, read IES directors' Guidelines.
