Cílem kursu je seznámit studenty s různými podobami a projevy náboženského radikalismu ve středověku. Tento fenomén budeme analyzovat v návaznosti na tak důležité koncepty, jakými jsou hereze, reforma, reformace, revoluce, apokalypticismus, utopie, millenarianismus a podobně. Budeme sledovat ideologická východiska, sociální zázemí, komunikační a výrazové strategie, rituály a postavy charismatických zakladatelů, vůdců, popřípadě mučedníků. Náboženský radikalismus budeme studovat v jeho historické dějinnosti, hlavní důraz bude ale kladen na textová svědectví a textové prezentace, a to z dílny jak samotných radikálů, tak jejich protivníků. Kurs nebude mít podobu klasické frontální přednášky, ale spíše se v seminární formě budeme v rozhovoru zamýšlet nad příčinami, specifiky, projevy a v některých případech i konstrukty jednotlivých hnutí. Základem bude společná četba konkrétních textů, jejichž jazyková podoba se bude odvíjet od možností a znalostí studentů; nejčastěji budou texty k dispozici ve staročeské podobě a v překladech do moderní češtiny (angličtiny). Hlavní pozornost bude věnována fenoménu středověkého náboženského radikalismu, ovšem s přesahem do raného novověku.
Předmět může být vyučován v angličtině, a to v závislosti na rozhodnutí garanta.

The course aims to familiarise students with various forms and manifestations of medieval religious radicalism. We will analyze this phenomenon in relation to important concepts like heresy, reform, reformation, revolution, apocalypticism, utopia, millenarianism and related ideas. We will explore the ideological foundations, social backgrounds, communication and expressive strategies, rituals and charismatic founders, leaders or martyrs of radical religious movements. The emphasis will be on textual evidence and representations, both by the radicals themselves and by their opponents, although we will study the historical context of religious radicalism.
The course will not take the form of a traditional lecture. Rather, it will be conducted in a seminar format in which we will discuss the causes, specificities, manifestations and, in some cases, constructs of individual movements. The main focus of the course is the collective reading of specific texts, the language of which is adapted to the abilities and knowledge of the participants, mostly in Latin, Old Czech and translations into modern English.
