|
This course will explore the current religious climate of the People's Republic of China. We will examine the impact and significance of the Cultural Revolution, specific religious traditions (Buddhism, Daoism, Confucianism, Christianity, and Islam), new religious movements, popular religion, the relationship between religion and popular culture, the role of the Chinese government, and the debatable cults of Mao and Xi. More broadly, we will look at the broad theme of religion and language, the problems that can arise from translation, and, finally, the definition of religion itself.
